My sons quad will no longer start via the electric starter or kick start. If jumped from another quad it will start but as soon as the cables are disconnected the quad dies. I'm sure it must need something similar to an alternator, but I have no clue what it's called on a quad,
Any ideas as to the items name and if it is something I can replace?
Thanks

Think I'd check the battery connections, grounds. If the battery is an older one, have it load tested first. If completely dead would probably not start? If you've eliminated the battery and connections, then could be a weak pulse coil on the stator. Here's a free Youth 4 stroke pdf service manual you can download and look over the electrical checks/trouble shooting. It's a 2009 but electrical, etc should be the same if yours is a different model. Thank you.
I know it's not the battery or connections as I've replaced the battery with a new one and it worked for a while, but once battery was drained, nothing. Even trickle charging the batteries results in same....works for a while then nothing. I will look at replacing the stator

Check that you are charging around 13.5-14 volts back to the battery while running. If not, this could be a regulator/rectifier problem causing the battery to drain down.
