Question 1998 scranbler 400 4x4 not working

OK.....I took apart the shifter switch and cleaned it, also replaced the two rubber O-rings. the switch appears to be functioning but the 4x4 still will no operated. I also moved the gray/white wire from the switch to a red/white post with negative results ???

One other thing to try is making a common ground connection for the both the hub coils as many have done on intermittent awd problems. Try this and see if awd works.

You have two brown wire coming from the strut coils leading up under the front panel. They tie in somewhere! Just cut these two wires, tie all 4 wires(wires from coils and ones you cut) to a larger wire and ground it either to the main ground(coil mount) or to the frame.

Yes you have the brown/white wire instead of the solid brown as in earlier models. One other thing I forgot is you can trace the awd button gray wire(the main wire that jumps from the shifter switch)and hook it to the red/white terminal and then see if the awd button lights up when pushed and awd funtion is good. I think that's how some have bypassed the shift switch entirely..

I moved the AWD button gray wire to the red/white post....AWD light came on with the key (even while in neutral) but still no four wheel drive.

Hmmmm.. Out of the shifter switch try the gray/white wire to the red/white and see if it powers up the awd button.. I'm still trying to remember how people did this with out replacing this high $ switch..
