Then you need one! Saw your post that the old one was stuck on a bendix that you removed? If so get a new one as the bendix could damage the case over time without this bushing, plus cause engagement and rattling problems.

The bushing that was stuck on an old Bendix is the one that inserts into the recoil cover. The bushing I do not have is on the other end of the Bendix that goes into the case. Part number 3083669.

Just to make sure because the parts diagrams are a little confusing: Is there a bushing that installs into the recess to the lower left of the starter gear in the attached picture?

Yes there is.. The same part number bushing(3083669) as used in the recoil housing..By the pic looks like you have one in there, can't really tell its condition.

nope. I only have one and need to order one. Do you think an Autozone might have a universal one?

If you can find an after market one this size good luck.. I never tried because I had a box full of them at the shop. But on this I'd be careful! Must be the right size, not worth taking a chance on cracking an engine case for a blamed bushing.. Again ebay is cheaper on these when you consider shipping charges from Cycle Parts Warehouse,Partzilla,etc.http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...493&mfe=search

2 Bushings installed and no more rattle! It does hesitate a bit starting but will start up quickly. I have two other Bendix's so I will try installing them to see if I can fine tune it.

A new Bendix fixed it. Starts right up, no rattles and idles good. I wonder how long it will last.
