Growling Noise in Transmission
#21
Old Polaris Tech,
I am putting my trans back together, and wanted to ask you aquestion about the output gear backlash adjustment. I gently tightened the snorkel tube untilthere was zero lash, and then backed it off (loosened) 7 notches while lookingdown the lock screw hole. The shaft nowhas approximately 1/16” or so of lash (play) in it when I turn back inforth. Did I do this correctly? Should there be approximately 1/16" or so of lash in it? The service manual does a poor job ofexplaining how to do this and I wanted to make sure I got it right beforeputting the trans back together. Thankyou for your help.
Thank you

Like in the manual shows I always marked the snorkel. Manual says to have zero lash, but you almost always have to turn the nut a little one way or another for the lock screw to set in the slot. 1/16 of an inch play in my opinion is ok.I've had the same thing happen.

Old Polaris Tech,
Thank you for the reply. If I read the manual correctly, it says keep tightening the snorkel tube until you reach zero lash, then back off 7 notches. If you back off 7 notches, then naturally there will be a little lash created.
This is where I got confused in the manual. Should I gently tighten until no lash is achieved and set the lock screw? Or should I tighten until no lash, then back off 7 notches and create a little lash?
Thanks again for your help

Here's what the manual says:
"Before turning the snorkel tube, look down
into the gearcase at the snorkel lock screw
hole opening (Photo 2). Now slowly rotate the
snorkel tube counterclockwise (Photo 3),
while counting the number of notches as you
rotate the snorkel tube. Rotate the snorkel
tube to the 7th notch (Photo 1 & 2) using a
2 3/8” wrench.
Now check the output shaft gear backlash
again by feel. If the output shaft appears to
be to tight, rotate the snorkel shaft
counterclockwise to the next notch or8th
notch." You still may end up with a small amount of play like the 1/16 inch you have as you're limited by what the notches allow you to have..
