Depending on model the gear shift switch may not be powering up the awd light. The bulb may even be burnt out but doesn't matter on this as it's just an indication that the awd is supposed engaged. Again it's usually the high $ switch in the shift box that's worn, not engaging the plunger. One way to bypass this is to open the front panel to get to the terminal board.Find the gray/white wire and move it to a red/white terminal which should allow you to have awd.

86 didn't have an awd model.First ones out was in 87 and strictly mechanical in operation,no electrical involved.Check the right side of the frame down tube for a plate bearing the model and serial # to show what you have.1987 Polaris TRAIL BOSS 4X4 (W878027) Front Wheel Assembly | Cycle Parts Warehouse

Glad it's working. This little bulb is Nla from Polaris. Hard to find, don't know the source that Polaris used but glad you were able to find one. After 93 or 94 models the bulb didn't affect awd,was just an indicator that it was engaged.Mini bulb places should be able to have them, but haven't found a replacement yet for this small blue base twist bulb.
