Three springs and it does the same thing, the detent lever and shaft are ok as you say, then it's got to be the cup that holds the ball may be gouged a tad or the problem is an internal cam problem itself. The detent when they're working right will flip back easily to the stop post when you turn it down and release it.Why I asked if it was the oem cam was that they were bad on grinding down exhaust lobes.Even though you say they look ok,I still think could be the cam itself. Plenty of cheap aftermarket cams around that come complete with the detent assy. If it gets to that point,I'd replace it unless you can discover what the problem is with this one. Plus look at the exhaust rocker arm pad to see if it has a grove in it or on the cam. Another sign the cup may be worn. Plus in the pic the detent should rest against the post!http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Sportsman-500-Camshaft-1996-2013/380694673743?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D40808%26meid%3D382ea205cbe64c13912769b0f3abc89c%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D251373432683

Rockers off and inspected no grove or wear in it or cam. If you look at pic I can take my finger move lever up against stop easy no resistance and it will fall down in same spot. Man I'm thinking junk springs lol if it goes against dowel with no resist and no reason for to to fall away .i watch it the spring look to weak won't even hold it against dowel. Hate to take it in for this but going crazy lmao

From what I can see in the pic the bottom spring isn't locked into the detent slot. Something just doesn't look right. Pic is kinda fuzzy for me to really see.

Sorry pic sucks but it's there you can see end of it protruding it sits in the recessed part of detent lobe. Looking on Internet and eBay. There are a ton of cams, from 110 to 210 how do I know what is a good one or are most made harder now days. I will order one with new exhaust rocker just because, but mine has no marks and all lobes are tall

Almost all are harder than the soft cams of the early Sportsmans. Several different brands out there(most are still Chinese) but this one sounds like it may be ok.
I've seen these cams packaged with exhaust rocker arms also on ebay.

Default Problem somehow solved

I went out to take one more look at detent. This time I let quad warm up for ten minutes. When I pulled cover off. Detent was working perfect! How and why not sure maybe it has something to do with the oil in it. I don't know what is in it. Seems thin like water when cold I checked it. Or maybe a little oil pressure in cam when pushing detent in was fight me.didnt seem like no resistance.
I am wanting to put valvoline 0/40 synthetic in would that be ok until spring? If so what should I run in summer? How many quarts I'm thinking prob around two? Thanks for the help! Guess I'll just live with it being a bear to pull start.lol
One more thing this quad has a motor knock .ive listen to a few vids and they say it's normal. Well since having my plastic off its loud. It is the snorkel amplifying the motor sound. If you put your hand over it sound is almost muffled out. Must be like a trumpet exaggerating the noise. Last thing to fix is that it bogs trying to go full throttle. Hoping it's the carb. The plug looks black.

Any good synthetic will work since it doesn't have a wet clutch. 0w40,5w40,5w50 are good oil viscosities to use. Could have been gummed up oil in the cam lubricating holes? Hope that's all there was to it. A lot of times people confuse drive clutch clattering with engine noise. You can tell if the guide buttons are worn by twisting the outer clutch cover back and forth. If there's a lot of play on the buttons where they hit on the clutch sheath guides, then that's probably the noise you're hearing. I've had plenty over the years that you could hear them coming before you ever saw them..By that time clutches were usually too far gone to rebuild..
