locking in gear when hot...
#1
Hi all, brand new here and to 4wheeling... First post too, hahahaaa
I have a new to me 2003 Polaris 700 and have had this problem a few times.
I have been riding my property and after the bike heats up and I'm in a torqueY postion, maybe stuck against a tree or plowing crap outta the way and on an incline or something and can't proceed, the tranny locks up in gear... Doesn't matter what gear I'm in, doesn't matter if I kill the motor, it stays stuck and will not shift.
Seems to clear up either when it cools down or when I physically get it out of the "stuck" situation...
Pulled the belt cover off, looks brand new, pulled the shift box cover off on the tranny and all looks good, could use some fresh grease, but the teeth are good and all moves freely.
Any thoughts on what could cause this?
Thanks!
Gary

My first thought was the outer gear selector that a lot of people have trouble with, but you say no teeth broken and still has some grease. Really no linkage adjustment and all I can think of is to do a gear case fluid change and if that doesn't help, then I'd still go into the outer selector gears, clean and pack with grease like this guy did. Hard to Shift 700 Sportsman 2004 - Polaris ATV Forum If that doesn't help, then the problem could be internal with those funky wide shift forks and wave springs.

Will give that all a try... But first I need to replace the rear axles... boots got ripped and destroyed the joints... Never even noticed them bad until I took the belt cover off and caught them outta the corner of my eye.
Nasty! Hahahahaa
Thanks again!
