2000 polaris sportsman 500 running rich
#1
Hey guys I just picked up a 2000 Polaris sportsman 500 and it seems like it's running rich, it's not smoking or bogging down. Just when its running it has almost a strong exhaust smell to it. I checked air filter and looked for gas leaks and all checked out good. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it to smell rich when running it doesn't make a difference weather it's idling or driving it still has a smell to it but no smoke.

Start at the easy stuff first like a new plug along with making sure the air filter is clean. Wouldn't hurt to check valve clearance also as that can affect the way it runs. .006 intake and exhaust. Plus it may be a worn out needle and seat, float level off, etc. If you're going to take a carb off don't just try to clean one, especially one on an 18 year old carb that possibly may not have ever been into. Rebuild it and be done with it. Shindy makes the best kits for these.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-Spo...!US!-1&vxp=mtr Don't buy one of those cheap Chinese knock off carbs as the jetting, etc may not be the same. Some give people more trouble than they're worth which is about the price of a good carb kit. Here's the pdf carb section from the manual. Will help on tear down/assy and setting float level. You have the BST34 carb.https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...U2gGlaHJWSIlbA Plus if you need a cheap service manual, here's one for 5 bucks.http://polaris-atv.brssm.com/2000-Po...ce-Manual.html
