Default 97 Sportsman 500 running rich

I have a 97 Sportsman 500. Recently installed a UNI air filter and DG exhaust and it's running rich. I'm assuming I need different jets but not sure which size to order. Any help would be appreciated

Depending on how rich I'd get the next two sizes up and give that a shot. Talk to your local dealer or performance shop (if available). Some will exchange them if they have some around. If not, you can always buy a kit.

Shouldn't be running rich adding an Uni filter and freer flowing exhaust. May be rich because of a worn needle and seat.Polaris Sportsman 500 1997 1998 Shindy Carb Rebuild Kit | eBay Plus wouldn't hurt to check the rocker arm clearances(.006 intake and exhaust) along with the exhaust lobe on the cam for wear. This 97 model falls in the range of soft heat treated cams on the 425 and 500 engines.

Glad OPT chimed in. I'm too used to dealing with EFI... If the things he mentioned check out then look in to the jetting. If anything, it would run leaner with a less restrictive air filter and exhaust. Was the UNI pre-oiled? If not, sometimes too much or the wrong oil could bog things down.

Sorry it took me so long to get back I've been extremely busy. I'll check the cam and rocker arm and go from there. Thanks for the advice!

It's putting out a little smoke that smells like fuel. It didn't do it before I put the UNI filter on it. It wasn't oiled when I got it so I went and got the UNI oil for it and perhaps didn't squeeze out the oil well enough. It has plenty of power and has only been ran probably half an hour since installed.

Check your oil for any gas smell. If it's ok,and level is ok, just drive it for a while and see how it does.
