All quad bikes have an alternator which produces AC. This is converted into DC by a separate rectifier, and the resulting 12 to 14.5v DC fed to the battery. Some children's quads use raw AC from the alternator to power the lights, and those with automatic chokes usually feed raw AC to the choke.
