I stretched mine out real well before winding it up, made sure it didnt snag when retriving, so far no issues. I have heard of the solid fairleads causing this, I kept my roller fairlead and have had no issues after 2 years.

Never heard this or experienced this before with my Hawse fairlead. I remove my winch rope every year to install a tow strap on the winch for plow duty. When I reinstall my winch rope, I always have the end connected to a tree and have good tension on the winch rope, use the winch as I reel it in.

I am thinking your refering to the added cover on the first 6' of winch rope, that is getting caught up and bundled in a mess on the rope itselve. These are supposed to slide over the beginning of the rope to protect it from excess wear.
