predator jetting question

I am going to run the k&n 1760 filter right out of the carb and am wondering if anyone has any idea where I should start out for jetting. I will be running at 5 - 10k feet in the 80's temp range. I want to run best at about 8k feet. I think Heapster is running a 170 main at about sea level so I figure around 160 at my elev?

Hi Jeff,
I haven't tried the slightly smaller slip-on K&N you're using, but it should be pretty close to the RU-1770. I also have not ever jetted for that high of an altitude, but I believe you should start off at 170. I have been amazed at how rich the Predator can run without really loading up. I would rather be safe and rich than too lean and deal with detonation and excessive popping. I'm running a 175 main at sea level in the SO CAL desert. At your altitude you may not need to change the pilot jet, but I had to go to a #50 from a #45 here at sea level. If I was you I think I would get one and have it available, along with a few spark plugs, so as not to waste you ride time when adjusting in your riding area. I also use all 8 discs and the quiet core insert at the end on the W/B pipe.
I still think the slip on is the best way to go. Simple, easy to maintain, and I know it runs very strong. There is a lot of talk about air intake velocity, ram air effect, and pressurized airboxes, etc. with these "Other" intake kits on the market, but I personally don't think they apply to a vehicle that generally never sees more than about 65 +/- MPH. Superbikes on the street that routinely see high speeds can and will get good gains from those type of airboxes. That's why they're used there. But as I see it, most quads don't have exposed airbox feeds anyway, and their speed impacting ambient air is not great enough to cause the ram air effect that some dream of. I also see alot of potential problems with making a lot of 'junctions' in any carb air feed system. They make great places for potential contaminant entry.
Stick with your slip on and mess with it till you get it right. You'll be pleased...Good Luck,,,

i am running a 162.5 here in texas but i have a w/b slip on, high flow intake tube from four stroke tech, k&n air filter and i still have a little popping every now and then the best way i found out how to jet this thing is to carry it my dealer they have an exhaust analyzer pulling the predator apart to change the plug can be a pain

Gotta agree with JJ on this one. I just finished some runs with the slip-on and a 165 main. I'm around 800'. I've got a 170 on order, just not quite enough color to the plug with the 165. This thing sure likes to breath.
Predator 530, I agree it's a pain to access the plug, but everything sure comes off nice once you get the routine down. Sure looks funny screaming a half naked quad. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif[/img]

Hi all,
Well, it's true...for quite a while, no one could recognize what kind of quad I had, cause the front skin was off so much during my 30+ jetting changes...
I was trying to figure out why it was popping...well of course, NOW I know it was the crappy stock CDI box...but I didn't then....so I guess I'm at least a semi-expert re: Predator jet changes!
Be sure to change out your stock carb bolts with the one I listed in my prior postings while you have your carb apart ..it'll save you hours of anguish over stripped phillips screw heads!!!
Good luck...and don't be"fraid" to jet up!!! This stock head and especially with the W/B pipe, is quite a breather!

Glad things worked out so well for your new Raptors...It is great when you have a dealer that is willing to take that kind of return situation...Let me know where you shop, cause I'll drive there next time!
I guess the "TOP SECRET" jetting thing from Superbike Shop is NOW EXPOSED to the world!!!! I hope you were "Cleared" for the release of information of such a national security caliber! For craps sake, did Gary think that no one could determine what the jet size was?? I wonder how much time he spends on each kit ...holding each jet up to a grinder to protect the "Secret, " then remarking each jet with his own "secret" number. I wonder what Mikuni thinks of that???
That was just one of many issues I had with that kit...along with the secondary air inlet position "Above" the filter!!! The last time I spoke with Tres, he said his kit was running very well, although he thought it was a bit rich..and it did appear so to me also, by the amount of carbon residue at the rear of his quad.
I'm glad I have my jetting set up to suit me...I like the Predator enough to spend the extra $350.00 to get a Vortex CDI,,,to fix something that Polaris should have offered to repair. After the crap and side dancing I have had from Polaris, even over simple issues like the seat rubbing a hole in the top of the airbox, I will never again buy a Polaris product. I don't care if they came out with a 125hp sport quad tomorrow..I don't like to be treated like this from an American company. I could have gotten this kind of treatment from the Japanese...
Anyway, Rob, take care and don't be stranger...Let me know if you're going to Glamis any time soon...I'd love to hook up with you there and check out your new Raptors...

First of all, nobody ask you for any input. Your always sticking your two cents in where your not wanted. Are you so jealous, you have to post right behind me all the time. Grow up and get a life. My point was that if a ported 580 don't need a jet that large, then a stock bike surely don't. Not bragging, just making a point. I could let them listen to BS like you post all the time and waste time and money. The more you post the more you prove you don't have a clue about a Predator engine. Lucky it seems the majority is not listening to you, just your few buddies, cause Superbike was full of engines waiting to be ported and bored yesterday. Gary's Ti-rod 580 Proto is well over 70 HP now, I guess your boys are still durability testing.
