Default 400 clutch spring help

I have a Scrambler 400 with hpd pipe and 39PWk carb when i first did these mods the only thing i changed on the clutch was the main spring i changed it to a orange HPD spring this setup pulled okay but wasn't real impressive on bottom end or midrange but pulled hard on top. I now have the full hpd aggressive kit for piped/trail mod 400's. this setup pulls very hard off the bottom and through the midrange but drops off quikly on top. The main spring i have now is red/yellow. I believe the secondary is purple and the weights are 55's. What clutching would you suggest for a steady pull all the way up? The setup I have now almost feels like I have lost to speed it may just be that the bike gets there quicker but i don't think so. Should i just change my gearing to get more top speed or change the clutching? Any help would be appreciated.

Default 400 clutch spring help

Running the same setup in my wife's quad, the plain hpd primary works great for her and it seems to have more topend and all around rideability. I ran the red/yellow when I had it and I felt the same way. She's running about the same times at the drags with the plain when you take the weight difference into consideration.

With the red/yellow you should run the 10-58 weights to work correctly. Change to the Polaris brown primary with those weights and it will work great. You can run the plain like Polarisfreak, but You should run the s-53 weights to engage it like stock. The red/yellow is too much spring on top end for the 55 weights, but that is why it rockets off the line for a little bit. Bubba

What they said, and get the TEAM Industries roller secondary. Actually I'm gonna have an almost new primary and HPD modded roller secondary for sale shortly.

Try Bubba's set-up. My brown spring finally came yesterday and I put it in with the stock weights. The difference is unbelievable! I don't know why HPD doesn't put this in their clutch kits. I've got alot more performance now with $20 invested than I had before with the $90 HPD kit. ANyone want to buy an HPD clutch kit less the secondary spring? It consists of the HPD primary and 10AL weights - I'll never go back to it so I might as well sell it.

Bubba, Between your port job and your clutching reccomendations, I'm now a REALLY happy Scrambler owner. Thanks for all of your help.

for sure a 42-32 helix won't do any good...

you need a 42-36
