Default Rear shock adjustment

How do you know what is the correct rear shock adjustment for the load? This would be for a Sportsman 500 HO.I have read that you should use a stiffer setting for climbing hills?

Again, Adjust the collar ride it, adjust the collar again ride it till you finally find a setting you are pleased with. A stiffer setting may or may not be right for you. Its all in the rider, or should I say alot has to do with the rider. What is the year of your machine? I am going by a SINGLE SHOCK adjustment which I have. Your ride is probably an independent rear . Let me kow what you come up with. Maybe someone else can better answer your ? Hope I helped even if just a little?

What is the easiest way to turn those collars....my tool kit didn't come with a spanner wrench.

I asked my dealer about a spanner and he said it was about 30.00 so I just used a pair of channel locks and a rag. I set mine up 2 notches for trail riding but will go up one more if I have a load.
