Default Master link problem

I was wondering if there are any tricks to help with installation of the master link on my 520 o riding chain. I cant seem to get them to go on without a fight. I can get it mostly on but in order to get the link on far enough for the "clip" to slide into the grooves I must use a hammer and a C-clamp. There must be an easy way to do this procedure. It takes me over one hour of fooling; with the link. Any info will help

I use a cresent wrench. One jaw on the end of the link itself, the other jaw on the end of the master clip. Squeeze and it snaps right on.

A chain tool would be the best answer here but I use a pair of Vice-Grips and a 1/4" nut to press the plate onto the pins, the clip then snaps on easily. Make sure the closed end of the clip faces forward..
