Default 4x4 in a scrambler do you need battery?

Hey I just have a quick question. Do you have to have a good battery in your quad to get the 4 wheel drive system to work. I was recently riding through some pretty good snow area's. I noticed my battery was going out last week, but didn't replace it yet for money reasons. Anyway, i figured I could pull start it no problem. However i accidentally hit the headlights while riding, and killed the battery completely. I then noticed that I didn't have 4 wheel drive anymore. It was a real pain trying to get over the snow banks in only two wheel drive. Does anyone know do I just need to replace my battery or am I looking at bigger problems here?

Yes, the 4wd system is electrical, and needs full voltage. If the battery is bad, it will not engage.

Also, sometimes a dead battery can cause the rev limiter to not function. So basically, you can go backwards 40+ MPH without holding the override.

Ok that's a relief. I didn't notice the rev limiter, but it probably did that too.

Check the fluid level on your battery. Iy may jsut need to be refilled with de-ionized water and recharged.

I heard the newer models you dont need a battery but for the 98 you need to have a fully charged battery to have 4wd. I use a light weight battery $40 2.9lbs & am now trying a 1.7lb version for $21. They're only 3 amp & 2.5 amp respectively but thats all you need for 4wd. It's a Deka Yuasa 610-682-6361. They'll give you list price but the warehouse price is what I listed. If you rev you quad up enough your 4wd will come back but it slams on very hard cause your at a high rpm. It doesn't sound healthy & over time I would think something would break. Hope this helps

Yea, Yea, I know. I've heard it all before, but thanks. It's funny but I lost my riding party among 3000 quad at a poker run & in the middle of the woods a total stanger asked if I was J Maloney & said I could ride w/ their crew. They recognized me from my pics they somewhere so I guess that's my "claim to fame".

I hope that is not true about the 98's I recently put a White Brother's battery eliminator kit on my 98 and haven't had a chance to see if 4wd works or not, but I will let it be known here when I find out...... I asked Modquad about this before purchasing the kit and well....... So.... If it doesn't work, he is fully responsible!!! J/K
