There are larger margins on the bigger, more expensive machines. The little Trailblazer has nowhere near the margin that the Sportsman 700 does. And yes Polaris charges the dealer a shipping charge, so in turn the dealer should ad that to the price of the machine. You really think that dealer would pay $175 (which is what Polaris charges) and not expect to recoup that money? I'm sure the shipping company has to get paid somehow. When the machine comes in the crate there is about an hour of setup to do it properly. Don't you think that should be paid for by the customer? After all, I'd want my machine to run, have oil in it, and steer straight, and have warranty, personally. I agree that some dealers inflate the shiiping charge and set up fees, that's their thing. Don't just call around to different dealers either. You can't tell anything by a price over the phone. Go in and talk to the dealer. You'd be surpised at how much you'd get (and lower price doesn't always mean the best deal) and you'd have a new respect for the hard work some of the better dealers put in.

Expert140 you are wrong about the shipping, when a dealer gets an invoice and see's how much they pay for a unit the $180 shipping fee is already in their invoice amount. For example (and I'm just using an outdated year on purpose) The dealer gets his onvoice for a 1998 sportsman 500, On the paper it says "MSRP $7000 Your cost $6000" And the $6000 already has the shipping rate in it so if you pay the MSRP of $7000 and then pay $180 more bringing it to a total of $7180 then you payed to ship that ATV twice! Did I explain that clear enough?

I don't think it's fair to make the dealer pay the freight charge. Do you pay shipping charges when you order something out of a magazine or online and have it shipped to you? Do you think the car dealers just pay the freight charges themselves to be nice? I don't agree with inflating thesse prices but be realistic, the cutomer should be charged for the shipping on their new atv, just like anything else.

The bottom line is whatever charges are incurred whether it be shipping or PDI the end user pay's. That's all there is to it. If you don't like to see the charges separated out ask them to hide it in the MSRP. The end result is the same, you pay.

There is only one figure that counts on a purchase, no matter whether it is an ATV, a car, a truck or a motorcycle. That is the out the door price. There are 2 out the door prices. The first is before taxes and the second is after taxes are applied. Knowing what the tax rate is in the area you are buying will insure it is applied accurately.
Anytime you go into a dealership and allow the salesman to start talking set up fees, shipping or whatever, you are setting yourself up for a burn. You do not allow the talk to get started. Simply and firmly insist on the Out the Door Price. If they are unwilling to give it or they say it is not that simple then leave. Go somewhere else.
It is understood the dealer is not going to take a loss on the sale. There is no need to start adding on hidden charges. You don't need a breakdown on his costs. All you need is an out the door price.
Once you have the MSRP and an Out the Door Price from your preferred dealer, then you can start shopping around for the best deal. By the best deal I am talking cold, hard cash. Not trinkets like key fobs and rack extensions etc. Your seller would love to satisfy you with several cheap items that he is buying at a substantial discount.
Have your financing secured before you go to buy. Prefinanceing and cash are looked at as almost the same thing. The worst thing you can do is go and try to negotiate then beg for financing. Money talks and B.S. walks. With the money in hand, either from your checkbook or personal bank, then you have a firm foundation to bargain from. If financing through a dealer there is a lot of hidden things that will end up costing you money, such as a high interest rate and even higher penalties. Not to speak of the higher initial purchase.
Buying out of state can sometimes save you paying sales tax. Depending on your state of residence you may or may not be forced to pay it at a later time, directly to your state tax commision. You need to know this before you go. Even the best sounding deals are not always so. This is why an informed buyer checks out all the angles before hand.
That said, there is a dealer in Tennessee that has some good prices on Polaris. As of this morning his prices are; 04 SP 600: $5999. 03 SP 600: $5699. 03 SP 500HO: $5399.
These are out the door prices with no tax applied to out of state residents.
The website is www.southernpowersports.com However as of this morning his Polaris prices are not online.
You can go to www.traderonline.com Then go to ATV's, new and used, 2003 to 2004, Tennessee; search. There you can view the prices for Polaris of Chattanooga.
My local dealer quoted me a price before the 04's came out on a 600. $6999. out the door. Tax included.
Next month I will go back with the cash and talk to him again and show him printed adds for this other price. Before I buy I will find out how much tax would be applied to an out of state purchase. That is the only way to truly know which is the best deal.
Another little thing to consider; Does the price quoted imply that all rebates or incentives go to the dealer or to you. In addition to my ATV I will be buying a winch, brushguard, handguards etc. Polaris currently has a $300. incentive on accessorys with an ATV purchase. If I don't get this incentive then effectively the dealer is trying to add $300. to his price.
