when tighening the chain i have to loosen the caliper bolt in order for the chain to tighten. for the second time now the bolt has snaped at the split of the upper bracket and lower caliper bracket. is there any tips from preventing this happening again? has this ever happened to anyone else?

Sounds like you are trying to tighten the caliper bolts too much. I believe the proper TQ on these bolts is 60 ft/lbs. but check the manual to make sure.

Caliber is a descriptive word when talking guns. Caliper is a brake part. Not sure where caliber comes from but I have seen it used a few times here in the forum when talking brake parts.

As for the problem at hand I think 96 Cobra has provided the only logical answer.

Use a torque wrench! You are over-tightening them. I think it's more like 15 ft lb's, but your owner's manual says for sure.
