2001 Scrambler 400 HELP!
My first 2 stroke. Bought from a Harley dealer, 1st owner traded it in. No books, so I ordered the Polaris Service Manual from my local Polaris dealer. The Harley guys did not think it needed oil except for the injection tank up front. Factory manual says to change crankcase oil and filter every 100 hrs? Nowhere in the book does it show the filter location. One section refers to the in-line filter from the oil tank to the oil injector. Another section shows an oil drain plug at bottom of crank case with a warning not to remove by mistake when draining the pullstarter. It warns that if removed you will have lost your crankcase oil. Nowhere does it show how to replace the oil, if lost???
I have good basic mechanical knowlage of cars, bikes and FOUR stroke atvs and thier engines.
Does the crankcase oil need to be changed, or does the oil injector pump thru the bottom end before it burns?
Sorry for such a long post!

There is no crankcase oil,but it does have a counterbalancer. The counterbalancer does have oil.The dipstick is located right behind the pull rope.It only holds about 70cc's of 10 w 30 motor oil.The oil injection for the gas comes in at the rubber boot between the carb and the head. What you were speaking of in the manual is pertaining to the 500cc four stroke. But the 400 two stroke does have a crankcase drain plug ,just in case it becomes contaminated with water and such.Hope this helps. And welcome to the forums.

CED is absolutely correct. Also just to add, the transmission is all by itself and has a drain plug too to change the fluid. That counterbalancer oil needs to be changed often. 70-75cc is less than 4oz of oil. That's cheap insurance considering the counterbalancer costs almost $400 new and is impossible to find a used one.If you keep the pull rope handle secured in it's place and dont ingest water into the motor then getting water in the engine will be pretty much non-exsistent. By the way, Welcome!!!!!!
