Default 400 Sport starter problems

I just got a used 96 Sport and the starter button doesn't work. The other owner said he took the switch apart and could not find anything so he took a wire from the starter to the battery and it fires. So the starter must be O.K. Is there any inline fuses or relay's that I can check? It pull starts on the first or second try everytime but that gets old. I have the manuel on order but I find more good info here.
thanks

There's a starter relay switch between the battery and starter. Just follow the battery cable. Make sure the connections are good before replacing the swicth though.

thanks crawdad. In tracing the wires I found that I have bigger problems I found 2 wires that are not connected the yellow from the switch and a brown. I think that is all so far so I guess I will have to wait for the manuel to get here to track them down..
Thanks for getting me started anyway.

The brown is your ground, I don't have the shop manual handy, and toooo much Predator info on the brain for the exact of the yellow. I can check later if you want.

Now this is working off a 99 wiring diagram....may be some area for error here. The only solid yellow found is the wire that runs from the stator to the voltage regulator...battery charge circuit. Hope this helps. You should be able to take a multi-meter at the solenoid, while depressing the button, you can check for voltage there, and the ground. I always like CRC 2-26 electrical contact cleaner. It leaves a protective oil barrier behind. I periodically spray connections and components, including grounds.

Hey Modsquad I had to wait until I got home from work to check you info. I had also hoped that my book would come today but not!!! The wire is definitly solid yellow and it comes out of the clump that comes from the handle controller. It has a round connector on the end. I also see a solid yellow with a female round on one end and a spade on the other it is only about 2 inches long so it can't have come from very far. The headlight is not plugged in now and I am not sure about them. I know one is grounded to brown.
I see a few other yellow wires down low. Where is that solinoid that I am supposed to check. I hope the other guy didn't take it out...

Don't let the hp numbers fool you. Its all in how you get it to the ground. Clutching clutching clutching!

Yellow=Hi beam wire for lights and indicator light Brown = ground As for your starter I would bet the relay switch is bad.
