Hey before you go out and replace the cover check the gasket out.I too have a 97' which had the same noise as your talking about,I replaced the gasket which was all but gone and this was why it was rubbing on the out side.Since then it has resolved the rubbing noise your talking about.

I agree with you BigBad!!! Very clean. So you ever take that thing on dirt??? My rims only looked that good the day I bought mine. Once I rode it they were dinged all to heck. Good looking bike steve.

I just had this same problem last week on a '97 500 Xplorer. My outer clutch cover was warped and someone on here gave me the idea to check it. I replaced the outer only, at $90, and it fixed the problem. The inner will probably not need replaced due to it being so much smaller and flat. Not a lot to warp. Plus, you will not have to pull off the clutch. Good luck...Rob

If you want the new cover with the drain plug then I believe that you have to replace the inside cover too, cuz it is a little different.

You don't HAVE to replace the inside cover also. You can, but don't have to. You will just have a few holes left over. They added more holes between the two covers on newer models.

So other than a few left over holes, they are the same? Cool. But all the other holes still line up right?
