Default 2005 Trailboss 330 chain adjustment

I have been trying to adjust the chain on my trailboss. When I attempt to tighted the chain as it shows in my book, the chain starts to tighten but then when I tighted the clamp bolts, then the chain starts to loosen again. Does anyone else have this issue? I do not have a 2 1/2" wrench so I am using the pin punch method to adjust the chain. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to try?

welcome! Book isn't always right if it still says to collapse the rear end to adjust the chain. Just loosen the bolts,(No weight on the atv),insert the punch through the sprocket into the rear carrier, push forward(turning the carrier) until you have approximately 1/2" slack in the middle of the chain, pull the punch out, then tighten the bolts on the carrier housing. If the chain loosens as you tighten the bolts, then tighten the chain a little extra before you tighten the carrier bolts. Usually when this happens is when a chain is worn and hard to adjust. Have the tires off the ground, turn the rear wheels and see if the chain has tight and loose spots as you turn it around. Stiff chain links, worn links can do this. OPT
