i checked my counter balancer oil for the first time today and it doesn't even show up on the dipstick this has me worried. i'm going to drain it and put new oil in. is the drain plug for it the one in the center of the motor right in front of the rear motor mount on the tranny side? how much oil does it hold?

 

You have three drain plug's on the bottom of the engine.1-for the starter housing.2-the one in the middle is for the counter balancer.3-is for the crankcase.It should hold around 70cc's.

 

70cc is not much just to let you know. That is only about 2 & 3/4 oz. I always just put 3oz in and let it go. There is a breather for it and it will get rid of it if it needs to. That takes just plain ole 10w-30. Bubba

 

that not good news,you need to check that oil very shortly,always change it as soon you can,it doens't cost much since it only take 3-4 ounces,
polaris put synthetic counter balance oil in them stock,so it's important to keep that lubricate and clean well there as well...

 

I have a 99 Scrambler 400 4x4 and I drained my oil tonight because it looked "milky white" on the dipstick and it was really milky when I drained it... Must have got some moisture up in there... Would it be ok to use 5w30 Mobil One Synthetic in there? I have plenty of that on hand since I use that in my Chevy Tahoe...

Also has anyone ever used kerosene to clean out this area? I've heard of people using it to clean out the inside of Ford 302 motors that are famous for their moisture inside...

I wouldnt see any problem doing that. Just keep the plug and filler top off and let it air dry a bit, then overfill it with the oil and run it till it gets good and warm then drain it and refill it again. You cant be too careful with the counterbalancers since they cost so much.

 

The counterbalance drain plug is the one that has a phillips-type cross slot built into the bolt head. Mine doesn't even have to be completely removed to drain the counterbalance.
The milky white may be from going through deep water, but it CAN be from anti-freeze. If it is just water, and you change oil soon enough, you will be OK. If it is anti-freeze, the seal is bad.

I'll take a picture of the oil and post it here later... It looks like chocolate milk, and doesn't have any green tint to it so I hope it's just from me trail riding through deep water and it's sucked up water? Any way to prevent this from happening in the future?

The 250 engines do not have a counterbalancer . You don't have to worry about it .

I use Belray gearsaver in balancers on 350's and 400's. There are gears and bearings in that area to lubricate , it looks like a two-stroke gearbox to me . The main thing is to make sure it has oil in it , as it is overlooked by many owners .

I over fill the counterbalance like Bubba , my reasoning is that it may never again be looked at by the owner (sad but true) . I think the maual calls for 100 cc's , I put in 125 when we do one .
