Default counter balancer question

I overfill the counterbalance on my machine, as well. To be honest, sometimes it is almost 1/2 inch over the full mark on the dipstick. The owner's manual states that the excess will be blown out the breather. I believe this to be true, as every time I check it, it always reads exactly full, even though I know I filled it overfull.

Default counter balancer question

I drained the oil last night and let it sit overnight with the plug and filler out... Today I put the plug in and filled it with about 75cc's (that's what the shop manual calls for in all of the 400cc 2 strokes 1997, 1998 & 1999.... I ran it for a while and drained again and what came out was stil pretty nasty looked like chocolate milk still so I waited and then poured oil in with the drain plug open to flush it out some and then put the plug in and filled it up with another 75cc's which was right on the dipstick mark...

Someone had a question to what a counterbalancer does.... In lamens terms it's a way to balance out the piston, the light crankshaft that's used inside and makes the larger 2 stroke motors run smoother without shaking all of the nuts and bolts apart... Most V6 and V8 cars have a external harmonic balancer on the front of the engine...

I use Belray gearsaver in balancers on 350's and 400's. There are gears and bearings in that area to lubricate , it looks like a two-stroke gearbox to me . The main thing is to make sure it has oil in it , as it is overlooked by many owners .

I over fill the counterbalance like Bubba , my reasoning is that it may never again be looked at by the owner (sad but true) . I think the maual calls for 100 cc's , I put in 125 when we do one .

Default counter balancer question

Do I need to replace the balancer or just the seals? Does the engine have to come out for this or can it be done in the quad? How do I know if the balancer is shot? It runs fine now and it does not shake. Do you think this will clear up if I just run it and drain it again? Or should I replace the seals now?

Thanks for your help

Default counter balancer question

I have milky oil comming from the cb oil. I drained it and flushed it 5 times. Filled it back up. Im going to run it for a couple of rides to see if it does this again. If it does, is it the seals for the counter balancer or is it the gasket around the water pump? How can you tell? I still have oil in it when it drains. Its just milky. Its sits in the garage in the cold weather. Will this cause it? Maybe when it warms up above freezing it will fix it self? wishfull thinking.

THanks for the help.

yep its blown i have no doubt about it if your lucky just the seals are bad, but that is caused by a bad bearing on the counterbalance if your going in that far you might as well have a new bearing pressed onto the counterbalance "Rick Ritter does that" get all new seals and a new bearing in your water pump..

Thanks Jayblazer,
Did you ever do one of these? Is it hard to do? Should I take it to my dealer? also if you did do it yourself or if anyone else has how long should it take to do?

Thanks again for the reply
