Looks like my 300 Explorer is self destructing after a 400 mile ride! First the fan would not shut off, then the brakes went south, the starter bendix engages the starter when it spins over a few times and finally a new noise coming from inside the belt cover. At an idle it sounds and feels like the belt is slapping the cover or else something else is loose inside there! You can place your hand on the cover and FEEL something hitting it? Any Ideas? I had an 86 Polaris that after riding a day, I worked on it all nite! Hope this one isn!t going to turn into that!!! Thanks.

That is probably the outer layer of the belt slapping the cover. It is generally caused by hot spotting the belt by doing something in HI range that should have been done in LO or putting a big load on it while taking off slowly. I have messed up a couple of belts doing things in HI but my 500 scrambler only has HI maybe that is the reason I shouldn't try to pull people out.

The cover may have simply slipped down. Loosen the bottom screw with the washer that holds the cover in place and put a screwdriver head or something of similar thickness between the bottom of the cover and the floorboard. Then tighten the adjustment screw back up while the screwdriver is still in place.

It could also be that the cover is warped from too much heat. That is what is wrong with my Scrambler 500. It was caused by something that I did, and we won't get into that! LOL I thought my dealer was pulling my chain, until I checked it and found that it actually is warped from getting too hot. It only does it at idle and if you give it the smallest amount of throttle, it stops.

*** UPDATE... I took my housing a part today and heated it up with a propane torch. I used an empty coffee can to reform the plastic. I got almost all of the rubbing to stop. I need to hit one place just a little more, to make some more room. After that it should be just like new.

Sledder, GET A LIFE. A guy wants some help on a problem he is having and people are trying to help. Then you show up with another one of your brilliant posts. It really is sad that you have no life, and must try to start trouble for fun.
Happy trails,
