I was wondering what the counter balance was and why it's called that? I know it requires oil and where it's located, it sounds like it's the oil that lubricates the engine? Also, what horrible things would happen if oil wasn't kept up? Thanx in advance!!

 

The counterbalancer is basically an offset weighted rotating shaft that smooths engine operation. Change/ check the oil on a regular basis.

 

Very horrible things. My water pump seal went out and I had water getting into the counterbalancer oil and it eventually locked up the counterbalancer bearing thus costing me greatly. Just check it every other ride or so and make sure it doesn't look like it has water in it and if it doesn't then just change it every 6 months or so. It is very costly to make the mistake I made in not checking it often enough. Hope this helps.

Also, using Mobil 1 10W30 in the counterbalancer quiets things down a bit too.

 

For all that doesnt know that reads this the counterbalancer costs over $300. That is not even including the whole teardown of the motor or other parts involved. I change mine very regularly to avoid costly repairs,Bubba

Check your counter balance before and after every ride. My TB 400 is in the shop today because the seals went out. The mechanic said if I hadn't caught it as soon as I did it would have been toast.
