New Owner of a 04 Sportsman 600
#1
I've been reading this forum for about a month now. I purchased an 04 Polaris 600 Sp about a month ago. I took it to the Perkinstown Trail with some Honda riders the day after I bought it. We put on 46 miles. I am very happy with my purchase. When we filled up at the gas station on county M, the 350 Rancher took .5 gallons after 21 miles(he rides really conservative) and the 450 Foreman took .8 gallons(he tried keeping up with me a time or two) and my "luxo-cruiser" took 1.5 gallons. That's about 14 MPG and maybe 66 miles per tank. After the motor gets broken in, I would gladly accept better mileage. However, the extra comfort and power is worth the worse mileage compared to what my friends get. Since that ride, I've built a short but very technical trail on my land in the creek bottoms. It's about 1/8 mile long with 5 log crossings that are higher in the air than what I've got for ground clearance. There is also a mud bog with a 90 degree turn in it thats about 40ft long. There's also a section that runs down the creek for about 100ft. The most difficult spots are the banks of the creek, you got to give er full throttle to get out! The fastest I've had the speedo read so far was only 52.......and it was not on a very long stretch.......I'll find a long stretch some time to test the top speed, I guess it'll go in the low to mid 60's, but who knows? Anyway, in about a week, the Rancher and a 335 trail boss will be going with me on an ATV camping trip. We will probably do the Dead Horse and camp near Clam Lake. Any of you guys from Wisconsin have any suggestions where we could pitch a couple tents and get ice and beverages?
Thanks

Bulk pack,
Hey man , i'm glad you have brought up this gas milage problem. I am in the process of buying a new sportsman 600 , but a little worried about the milage range on a tank of gas . Our group does a 90 mile ride with the only gas stop at about 60 miles , I hate to haul gas if you know what i mean . I have a foreman 450 now, with about 73 mile range, ready to exchange "sore butt" for less miles.
Need to know of anymore problems if they are any ?

Hey Man,
I haven't experienced any problems yet, and my dealer assures me that I won't experience any problems. When I was first looking at the 600, my dealer told me that I could get around 75 miles per tank and maybe a little better after breakin. However, my riding syle probably won't allow that type of mileage. 60 miles would probably make a 600 rider wonder if they are gonna make it. The only "quirk" about my 600 is that it's cold blooded. It starts right up with or without choke, with the choke off....for the first 5 minutes or so.......the engine does not respond very well, especially at lower rpm's. If I use the choke, it seems to get running a bit too rich and floods out...almost. I wonder what it'll be like when it gets cold out this winter? After the engine is warmed up, it is absolutely perfect! The throttle response is very crisp and keeps me happy. Happy deciding.
p.s. My buddy with the Foreman kept on calling my SP 600 a "Cadillac" after each time he rode it!

Hey,
I just bought an 03 600. I like everything about it so far excpet a couple of things. The clicking noise from the tranny shifting around drives me crazy, just don't sound good. My choke doesn't work at all. If I use the choke after it has been setting a day or two, it won't crank at all. But if just turn the key and give it a little gas it will crank and need a little time to warm up. I sold my 01 foreman s and got the 03 600, so far I hadn't missed it yet. Will find out for sure this winter during hunting season. Any help on the choke problem, will be very tough to live with this winter.
