gas milage on the sp. 600
#1
Hey guys ,i'm in the market of buying a 04 sp 600 , but im also hearing a few negative responses on the gas mileage . Our group rides some 90 mile rides with a gas stop at about 60 miles, so you see my
concern . I do not like to carry gas while riding , so anybody that knows first-hand about this help me out.

My 04 600 got 14 mpg when brand new. Now that it has over 350 miles on it, it is getting around 14.4 mpg. The only place I've check the milage was while ridding in the mountains of Oklahoma and about 95% of that was in low range. I've never checked it on flat ground running in high range. My friend has an 03 Sp500 and his gets about the same as mine.

The distance per tank will increase after break-in (20 hours) or at least mine did. My 500 get an average of 20 mpg but less when I am hammering on it in the mud and in low range. The 600 I ride with gets close to the same but he has a slightly smaller fuel tank (2002 has a 5.25 gallon tank - 2003 has a 4.75 gallon tank). If you are cruising the milage should be above 20 mpg. If you are giving it hell the milage will be around 15.

I've got 373 miles on mine so far and haven't noticed the gas mileage getting better yet. I've ranged every where from about 9 to 16 mpg depending on the type of riding. I don't ride fast, but if I ride alot in high I usually get at least 13+. But when I ride alot in low on technical trails with some uphill climbs it usually gets between 10 - 11.
A week ago we rode 51.7 miles with 27 miles of it in low and after adding a gallon to the tank I could see the bottom of the tank. I didn't go on reserve but it couldn't have been far away. If you figure a half gallon reserve (don't really know), then I had anywhere from a half gallon to a gallon left. So at best I had 10.8 mpg or at worst 9.8 mpg even though I spent the last 25 miles or half my riding in high gear.
Unless I know exactly where I'm going or exactly how long I'm going to be there I always carry extra gas. What I usually do is figure on 10 mpg not counting a half gallon for an extra extra reserve and then carry gas accordlying. Usually an extra gallon or sometimes three in two cans.

I have an 04 600 with 60 miles on it now. I've checked the mileage once....it was 14.6mpg. That riding was all high range but slightly "spirited." Friday after work, I'm leaving for a weekend of camping on the SP. I'll be getting on the ATV trail in Eleva, Wisconsin and head for Wild Rock Camp Ground or possibly Schneider Park for camping that night. Saturday, I'll head for Lake Arbutus and possibly go towards Black River Falls. Sunday, I'll ride back to Eleva. I plan on riding conservative, which will be easy because I probably will be by myself. I am anxious to find out what my mileage will be. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Hey People,
I didn't believe it, but my SP600 impressed me this past weekend. I left Friday night at 6pm from the trail head just north of Connors lake near Winter, Wisconsin and ended up doing the mighty Dead Horse run at night and by myself....(which was not the smartest thing to do!) I made it to Twin Lakes campground (just north of Clam Lake) by 10:30pm and enjoyed the best marinated tenderloin steak I've ever had! Well, the odometer was at about 65 miles and I had not switched to reserve yet!? I was wondering if the reserve worked well or not like on some motorcycles. With my 2 gallon gas can, I felt somewhat safe to push on to the nearest gas stop. Well, to my suprise....at 72 miles and an average speed of 19.6 miles per hour on the gps (with a section of railroad grade held at 45-50 mph for 10 miles) I put in a whopping 3.77 gallons to top the 4.75 gallon tank off. Cool! good mileage! Just over 19 miles per gallon. The above riding was done 99% in high range. Well, another 56 miles to a fill up on my route back to the parking lot and I put in 3.10 gallons. Just over 18 miles per gallon this time! I'm sold! You can get okay mileage with the 600 if you use the throttle correctly! By that I mean that it's easy to keep the pace up without using more than half throttle if you are sort of patient and let the transmission do it's job. I seldom used more than half throttle on this trip. I did have my SP fully loaded with a portage pack on the front rack and a Givi 36L top case with 2 coleman coolers on the rear rack. I was able to hit 62 mph on the Tuscobia trail while hitting small bumps constantly. I imagine on smooth ground it may do 65 or so. It cruises up to about 48 with little throttle, but to get more speed, you need to give much more throttle to go a little bit faster.
BTW, after about a month of tooling around in low range on my property, I checked the mileage with usage of low range at 100% and it only got 10.1 mpg! So, you could say the polaris SP600 gets 10mpg while rock crawling and 19mpg on faster trails. I did manage to put a very small blemish in my front right rim cuz I brushed up against a piece of granit at speed. Once home, I spent some time cleaning and it looks like new again.
So, what do you rides get for mileage?
