Default Another Predator Tranny(I think) Related Question

Okay just recently I've been noticing my Predator doing some funky crap. This is the second tranny(first was my fault) I'm on. Here is my prob.. the first time I noticed my problem was while hauling *** down my street. I was in 5th but all of a sudden it jumped outta gear into 3rd. I was like whoa! Then the next time it happened was in the dunes...while climbing a hill... It seems to do it only when under a load. Now my question, is there something slipping in my tranny that might be clutch related?, or is there something majorly wrong with it that will only get worse with time? I know I've heard a lot about bent shift forks and what not but Im pretty sure that with mine that is not the case. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's definately not clutch. If clutch was done, you would be revving and not moving. Definately sounds like the shifting forks are not holding the gears in place which can mean bent or worn..and it's really odd that it dropped to 3rd. I would definately split the cases and have a look see, cause if it is popping out of gear under loads...definately shift forks!!

I say shift forks as well. What did you do the first time the trans went down? Sounds like the shift forks were thought too be goo the first time and did not get replaced??

John, replace all the shift forks this time and the damaged gears. The engagement lugs are damaged that's why it comes out of gear under power. The abrupt disengagement spins the shift drum and that's why it finds another gear, not good regardless. You would be wise to have all the parts treated (Cryogenics) this will increase strength and longevity. If your one of the guys that normally powershift (full throttle, clutch or not) it doesn't matter who makes the trans, it will break in time, just a fact of life.....

To be 100% honest while duning I have probably used my quad 5% of the time. Only time I ever use it is to get into 1st. and back to neutral. How much should changiing my shift forks cost? Is this hard?

I'm a little confused by your last reply, I'm guessing you don't use the clutch when shifting. Bad habit John!! Your causing damage every time you shift, your trannys simply won't last. The parts aren't hard to change but it's really a total tear down to do it, the cases have to be split to access the trans. Can't give you a cost estimate, you'll have to check around.....

I've just always found it quicker to shift by slightly letting off the throttle before shifting. I did that with my old 250R and only had to change the clutch once. So im going to assume this is a time consuming process argh. Thanks

I've had tons "O" fun holding the revs at 7,000 in neutral. Then, I simply stomp on the shifter for my launches. J/K Anyone want to try it and get me the video?

I agree bartlett, the honda's and yamis I've ridden love to be power shifted...but the pred is the exception...it loves having it's clutch pulled it. I pull my clutch for every shift and the tranny feels good...clutch plates are cheaper and easier to get to than tranny gears...anyone care to disagree with that?
