I think its tin and nickel that makes up crome. They add crome to carbon steel to make it harder so you can make parts thiner and lighter but still very strong...

Chromium Molybdenum alloy steel It's all about strength. Thinner wall tubing, about half, weighs in about half the weight with even more strength. It costs a lot more, and though easy to weld, requires heat treating to keep the welds from becoming brittle because of the elements in the alloy shifting to the hotter weld areas, and possibly "burning out" losing the strength of the original alloy.

Chromium is an element as is Molybdenum. Nickel and Chromium are used in plating in different percentages to achieve different types of finishes at various costs. Tin is used in making solder and soup cans....

Chromoly is basically a blend of iron, chromium and molybdenum offering higher tensile strength than steel. This greater strength allow the manufacturer to have the tubes “butted”. Butting is the process of making the tube walls thinner in the middle while retaining thicker walls at the ends where the welds are to be made. This makes for a lighter tube that retains the strength of regular steel tubes. Chromoly is also a very repairable material.
