I need some feedback on what you may think is wrong with my sportsman 500. I posted a while back about hitting a deep puddle of water and the 4 wheeler started spitting and spudduring and belt slipping. Now, after a week of sitting, i tried riding it again: starts fine, rides fine until mid-throttle and up, no top end, spits and acts like fuel and burning good at half or more throttle. Sort of reminds me of what it would do if it were out of gas. Any ideas? The belt is not slipping now though. Thanks PB500.

Check the carburetor, it's probably packed with mud, and or you might of gotten some mud and water mixed with your oil. Check both of these.

Bear, it definitely sounds like you have a piece of "trash" stuck in your main jet in the carb. The pilot jet is what controls fuel/air mixture up until you hit about 1/4 to 1/3 throttle, then the main jet takes over. From the symptoms your describing, your pilot "circuit" seems to be working fine. If you have something stuck in the main, it will start and idle fine and maybe even putt around the yard ok, but if you open the throttle (hard or easy, it doesn't matter) the bike leans out and wants to stall because it is starved for fuel. You probably notice that if you let off quickly, the bike usually sputters, then starts idleing again and sounds fine. You will need to remove either the nut on the bottom of the carb bowl (if you have that style carb) or the entire bowl (once again, depending on carb type). If you can look around on the net at some of the carb jet manufacturers, you can probably find instructions on replacing the jet and you want to follow the same procedure, but instead of replacing, you are just cleaning and re-installing. I would look for companies that offered jet kits for your specific bike and try to find the instructions online.

If you are not familiar with this, it isn't rocket science, but you should really find someone who at least understands the carb and how it works to give you a hand.

Good luck!
