Backup light for 04 Sportsman

600 reverse light
I am trying to hook up a backup light to my early model 04 600 Sportsman. Is there anyone who knows which wire to tie into. I am going to use a relay hooked to a good power source. Reverse is activated with a resistance signal, like a fuel gauge, from the shifter to the speedo through the purple from what I understand. Problem is this wire will not light a test light let alone a relay. Anyone familiar with the Polaris inline shifter electrical stuff.
I have heard there is a backup alarm available, where does it tie into the system? Not that I want to install one of those noisy things but it would be a place to tie in to.

Backup light for 04 Sportsman
I had a backup light on my 01 HO hooked up to the purple wire under the hood. I used a toggle switch and fuse, but the power came from the purple wire. I just used a spade terminal and plugged it right in. I used a toggle switch so that when the switch was off the light would never come on, but when on, the light would come on when in reverse or the override button was depressed. When I got my 03 700, I was going to do it the same way. The purple plug is there, but like you said, I couldn't get it to show anything on the multimeter. I went a different route. Under the hood, there is a red/white wire with tubular plug end. It is hot when key is on. I used toggle switch and in line fuse. Now I can turn it on without having to put in reverse. According to wiring diagram, that purple wire should work though. It looks like the diagram for the 01 HO if memory serves correctly.

The inline shifters are different in how they send a signal to the speedo which does everything now.
The older HOs have the H pattern type shifter and has a switch that indicates either fwd or rvse. Hos did not get the new inline shifter till 04 1/2. The twins have always had it but the speedo or cluster as they call it has changed.
