coolant in engine?96 xpress
#1
i have a 96 400 xpress that will not start due to coolant in the cylinder..drain the coolant and it runs fine..i removed the head and it appears to be ok along with the gasket.i removed the water pump and it appears to have been leaking because the bearings have rust on them..i have water pump seals on order but i dont think this will repair the coolant in combustion chamber problem..any suggestions..thanks

Unless there is a crack in the cylinder or head, the only way water can get into the crankcase is through the head gasket or water pump - there are no water ports in the "bottom end" of this engine. The 2 stroke engine will "pump" water from the crankcase into the cylinder - the same way it gets fuel from the carb to the crankcase to the cylinder. The balance shaft should be checked for slop, as this is what drives the water pump and may have cause the seal failure. The inside bearing of the balance shaft can be replaced, but the big bearing of the shaft is part of the shaft assembly - (about $380). If the balance shaft checks out OK, you should at least replace the small water pump bearing along with the seals, as well as replace the crankshaft seal located inside the balance "sump".
