Default 250 trail boss starter problem

I own a 91 polaris 250 trail boss 4x4 that has a weird starter problem. It will start sometimes with very little or no hi pitch squealing, other times it will just barely turn over and SQUEAL so loud it will hurt your ears. What do I need to do to correct this problem?? Thanks

The 2 stroke polaris' had a pretty poorly designed placement of the starter. They put them at the bottom of the engine, where, if the OWNER did not drain the starter housing regularly, the collected mud/water affected the starter bearings. Even to the point the mud/water would seep into the starter body and "lock up" the starter. A lot of times a good cleaning and lubing of the starter will correct problems, sometimes a "kit" is needed with new bearings/bushings and brush plate.

Another bad factor of not draining the starter housing is the mud/water sits in the bottom of the starter housing and eats away at the starter shaft splines, rendering the starter "junk".

If "rebuilding" the starter is not something you are capable of doing - it would be cheaper to replace the starter with a new on off Ebay, than to have it rebuilt.

i ran into a similar situation today....I have an 01 scram 400 2stroke, sometimes the starter would engage and turn the engine, other times it sounded like it was missing completely.....but it would always start with the pull start...is this the same problem?

From experience, the starter "spinning" without engaging could mean a dirty/defective "bendix" or the brushes may be worn enough (or dirty) to not get enough amperage through to spin the starter fast enough to make the "bendix" engage.

Yeah it will start no problem every time with pull rope, but at times the starter will engage but put a heck of a drag on the motor just barely turing it over and making a hi pitch squealing noise, when this happens you can grab the pull start and like nothing pulls right over and starts every time Thanks Mike

usually i don't have anything to say about bashers but this little honda punk is getting on my nerves. if you like honda so much why don't you go to their forum and talk your trash. the people on this thread love their polaris machines and come here for help. it's people like you that diminish the quality of information here. go play with your tonka toys before you get a polaris spankin.

lol i have a honda, a polaris, yamaha, suzuki and kawasaki lol, there all awesome. and every1 of em has broken before. hes just a little stuck on his foreman lol
but sometimes things break b/c of the owner and sometimes @#$% happens
anyway my bendix went bad basicly b/c the bike is 17 years old and it just went bad! it lasted 17 years of ridin the pee out of it with just 1 rebuild...100$ wow...and starts great with the rope lol. so my polaris has been well worth it and its as good as honda or anyother any day. most of the time its how the machine is taken care of just like cars ( you change the oil in a civic and it'l go 300,000, dont change the oil and itl go 15,000. same with any other make and model. but at least polaris is made closer to the usa than the others,...americans reall need to make a atv thats actually in high number production.. it surley would be the best, we make the best everything else

stumpjuper im in NC too where u at?
