Why is it that a 2000 Sportsman has to be steered with both hands at low speed and setting still, but our 2003 Sportsman can steered with one hand easily at low speeds or setting still?

The main reason is that in for the 2001+ models, they changed the steering linkages, for less steering effort.

Two of our friends just bought 2004 600 Sportsman and they steer like our 2000.

The 600s are heavier than the 500s, that will make some difference.

The tires may be a factor, as well. Try airing up the front tires, and see if that helps it steer easier.

I have a 1998 Sportsman and it steers like a charm with 5 lbs. in the front tires. I know that is a tad too much, but what's the downside if it makes it steer easy? I vote for airing them up like Farmr 123 said.
