In 1987 Polaris put out a sporty 250cc 2 wheel drive quad called the cyclone. The machine put out 32 hp @ 7000 rpm.It weighs 400 lbs and is pretty snappy. It has this pretty cool six-pack rack on back and a small tube up front. It was a limited production machine and was only made one model year! The machines major drawback was cooling the engine. Not enough room for airflow. The frame is a round tube with bright orange paint.White plastics and tank, bright blue seat, cowl, and tool box lid.Graphics were red white and blue. The Increase in horse power was due to race style porting from the factory, throated 34mm mikuni carb, and an exhaust that looks very similar to all the race pipes sold now for the polaris 250 machines. Coincidence?Don't think so. Starter block off was cast in the case. Fly wheel and head left room for tuning. It is definately a what the !@$@ was that!?

along with the increased power, were the cyclones much faster as well? What can i do to gain that bottom end power they had and not lose ne top end. What else is there that cost not to much but will really bump up the power? thanks

You wont lose any top end by doing any mods. You lose top end if you change gear ratio or went to a bigger tire. If you do mods for bottom end you well gain some top end just because of the HP increase but depending how you want the power band to kick in depends on the pipe and clutching. From experience the HPD trail pipe gives you the best of both worlds. It gives you awsome bottom end snap with around a 5mph added top end speed. The next biggest increase would be porting. This is also a huge gain like the pipe. And yes the cyclones were much faster and then they made the 300 express. It was like the cyclone but 300 cc 2 stroke motor.

Pipe, port and carb would be the first things if you don't want to do all that maybe start with having the flywheel machined.Removing excess rotating mass will make it spool up faster thereby giving more to your bottom end. 2 many, did you see the cyclone that's for sale in South Wesetern PA? The guy wants $1400 last I knew.

Is there any way to not lose top end when going with a bigger tire? I am only wondering, cuz i like to ride in mud and sand, and i have noticed that i am getting stuck more and more. I thought with better and bigger tires i would be able to make it thru better. would it make sence to go with the same size tire but somehow increase the ground clearence? If so, how could i increase my ground clearence?

You could regear to make up the difference of the larger tires

If it is possible to go with a taller tire with the mods you could actually gain top end speed because your changing to a higher gear ratio. I know in drag racing changing your tire height by two sizes changes your rear end gearing by one ratio on a car. Just a general rule of thumb. Taller tire = higher gear = more top end speed, If you have the power to pull the taller tire.

when you say regearing, do u mean that with a bigger tire regrearing happens or i should regrear if i get a bigger tire? Also, does anyone know the max size of tire that i could fit on my stock tb with the stock rims?

If you want more ground clearence by adding bigger tires, then you will lose acceleration, but gain more top end speed. You can re-gear with differnt sprockets so that the larger tires won't affect your performance
