RCR/HPD Performance ???
#1
Here's the deal, I want more performance out of my 99 Sport 400. I've read everything on RCR and HPD that ya'all have writen. Here are my conclusions;
1. RCR has the best customer service (thats important)
2. HPD pipes have a better fit and finish.
3. HPD pipes don't vibrate as much.
4. HPD is quieter (thats important)
5. HPD pipes "claim" a 7 to 9 HP with just the pipe.
6. RCR, is 10 with the whole kit.
7. HPD clutch kit includes more than just the spring, but is it really necessary?
8. Do you have to rejet with the HPD pipe?
So, am I right? I can't aford to experiment (the Army doesn't pay alot, but that's not why I'm a soldier), what I get, is what I have to use. So I have to do it right the first time. I'd really appreciate any and all imput. Rick, I know you read these, tell me the ins and outs. Thanks

BLH,
I went with the RCR pipe and the HPD clutch kit. Oddly enough, I found the HPD pipe to be slightly louder than the RCR pipe. Rick's trail pipe does everything as advertised, but does it at a lower RPM than the HPD trail pipe. This is good, because you don't want to over rev a stock piston. They have proven to be quite fragile once you get it anywhere near 7000 rpm for any length of time.
On the average (Rick will disagree with me on this) you do need more than a primary clutch spring. You need a spring for the secondary clutch too. The secondary clutch spring helps back shifting and upshifting. Also lighter flyweights help give it a higher engagement and act as a sort of "stall converter" (as in an automatic car transmission) and gets your quad close to the meat of the powerband prior to take off. If you want maximum performance from a pipe, you must get a clutch kit for it. It may sound confusing, but you'll be able to see and feel the difference.

If you talked to the same guy a hpd as i did how can you say that rcr has better custermer service i no rick has good service but i emailed him twice with no reply. So i went to hpd. I called up there to ask about there cam. And i told him my prob with my bike stalling at 3/4 to wide up and he was excatley right and now it runs perfect.
BTW the cam wont be out for awhile becuz it is breaking crankshafts

I went with the RCR trail kit for my 99 sport and have been very happy with the results, I have yet to change clutch springs only because I have not had to go into the clutch area yet. Also I used a set of the boyesen reeds and that made a big diferance also. The sport now feels about twice as strong as it was stock. Hope to replace tires and rims sonn as I wear out the stock tires.
I feel that what ever set up yu choose you will be happy with the results.

I went with an HPD pipe, silencer (muffler), and Clutch kit. The performance gains are very close to the same with RCR from what I have read. All I know is my quad is a rocket now. I traded in my 99 scrambler 500 4x4 for a 2000 scram. 2x4 400. I modified the 400, and I love it. I plan future modifications. The reason I used HPD is because my dealer races polaris quads and he recommends them.
