Has anybody ever had a problem with the oil filter leaking on a scrambler 500? Me and my friend where riding today and the quad just shut off, think it just sucked some powder we just started it back up and kept going. Less that five minutes later it shut off again and wouldnt start back up, it made a clunk clunk and I knew it was bad news. The wierd thing is the low oil light never came on, and it leaked around the filter causing it to become too low. Me and my dad have not yet tore apart the engine but we do know that the connecting rod is probably broken. Has anybody had any filter oil leaking problems? It was a K & N filter which I highly trust.

 

A friend of mine had the same kind of problem. We were riding at high speeds when his four wheels locked up. He was able to hang on and did not get hurt. The oil leaked from the filter. My hypothesis is that the dealer who performed the oil change was probably distracted and did not screw the oil filter tight enough.
There was oil all over the oil filter side of the machine. The dealer was not able to explain why the wheels locked up (probably a safety engine cut off system when the oil level or pressure drops). No major damage, just simply put a new filter and filled the machine up with oil and it started right up. He has put alot of miles on the quad since then with no problems to report. His machine is a 2002 Sp500.

I don't know if they have low oil pressure sensors on them. I don't believe that my 2002 700 or 800 have them. Hope all goes well though.

I took my truck into the shop for its second oil change when it was new to my friend. After a few miles I went to get a bite to eat. Came out and the pavement under my new truck was covered in oil. He hadn't screwed the filter on tight enough. Lucky I caught it in time.

 

Maybe it's just me, but everytime I stop or park the bike I give it a quick look over to see if there are any problems. I would hate to be 50 miles in the bush and have a breakdown.
