SP500 Engine Oil - The story of a Family Feud
#1
My Dad and I are having a very heated dispute over what weight engine oil to put in the SP500's (he has a '96 SP500, we have a '98). The dispute may very well ruin Christmas between us (I doubt it - but it does sound good to say it).
Here's the deal - he says one weight, I say another - What engine oil do you use, and why? (Dad was born in Missouri - so I have to SHOW him)

I was always told to run 0W40 Polaris Synthetic in a Polaris 4 Stroke, and nothing else...that is all Polaris sells, and the aftermarket shop I hang out in even tells me I have to buy from Polaris.

I have been using Moibl 1 in mine (ok, not the two stroke). Other than an occasional attraction to a tree now and then (it couldn't be the way I ride) I have had no problems.

I only use the Polaris 0W40 engine oil and Polaris oil filter and the other Polaris fluids: AGL (ATV Gearcase Lubricant) for the trans, ATV Front Gear Drive Oil for the rear gear case (I know it says front, but it IS for the rear), and Demand Drive Hub Fluid for the front differential. I have a Sportsman 600 Twin, and this is what mine calls for. I figure since I paid so much for the machine, I won't take a chance and put anything in it other than what it calls for.
BTW, I think no matter where you are, Texas or Missouri (not too far away from each other), or way up in the Colorado Rockies 10,000 ft + elevation, it's best to use the Polaris 0W40 oil. JMO though.
Good luck, hope you win. (Dads hate to be wrong!!)

Thanks guys, I ended up carrying him down to the dealer to prove it though. The Clymer book calls for 10w40, and he keeps wanting to put 20w50 in it because it has a lot of miles on it and thought it needed thicker oil to"fill in the gaps". We changed his oil this weekend to the Polaris 0w40 synthetic, hopefully there is not too much damage already done to the cam......
