The motor shouldnt be a problem. But the trans will. The 99 is a concentric drive. The 95 is not. I think you would have to change the swingarm and rear brakes, possibly the axel too? The front you would have to change to a shaft drive with a new front gearcase and possibly axels? But you dont have to install the 4wd

So the concentric drive is more than the position of the swingarm on the frame......
So the 99 400 motor, will fit the 95, but the trans and everything wont work. This is a project i am doing and trying to figure this stuff out before i buy the parts. Any help is great, Thanks a bunch.
Merry Christmas.

I dont see how the motor would be a problem. Hopefully someone can confirm this for me though. But the concentric drive machines got the shaft drive up front. I believe that the non-contric drive machines had the rear brake on the transmission, rather than on the rear axel like the concentric drive machines

I dont know if that would work. The axels are different cuz the concentric drive one has splines that mount a hub that the brake rotor attaches to. The swingarms definately are different, so that would have to be changed if you go with the trans with the concentric drive. You can see the differences at Partsland. Here is the concentric drive versus the non-concentric drive See the difference

That makes sense. I would still like to split the brakes up, can i do this with the brake being inside the tranny? If not, could i use a concentric drive axle with my carrier so that it would have splines for the rotor. I have seen a couple people use the rear brakes from a ds650, any ideas on that?
Thanks for everyones help.

The 400 motor from the '99 will fit into the '95 - all of the "basics" of the 400 engine were the same - the cosmetic differences may be small, minute things like.... are the charging/ignition stator wire connnection plugs the same design. If you have both engines, there is not a problem to swap the little things over, if need be. You can compair engine cases to the 1999 400 and the 1995 400 here. Engine cases show the same part #'s. The most critical part was making sure the clutches were aligned correctly.
I replaced the engine in my '96 SP400 with the engine out of a '94 Sport 400 (at the same time I stuck a '87 TB 250 engine in the sport frame) and there were very few things I had to "swap" on the 400 engines, the stators being one, mainly because the sportsman uses a larger charging curcuit than the sport, on the other hand, the TB 250 engine into the Sport frame was a whole different ball game.
