Default Sportsman odometer test function

I have found that when the odometer's select button is held down as the key is turned on, it puts the bike into some kind of test mode. Does anyone know what this function is used for?

I played with that for a while myself. I believe that is what the Polaris Service Techs use to transfer over mileage and hours when replacing a bad speedometer. It’s also where you can set the units to Kilometers instead of miles. I recently replaced the speedometer on my bike not long ago and I was trying to transfer the existing info. I just could never figure out what to press or do to make it retain the info. It’s not in the factory service manual either. Just letting it jump out of the “service” mode didn’t do it. I moved or pressed everything that electrically connects to the back of the speedometer except the reverse override. I bypassed that a while back so it doesn’t work anymore. Maybe that’s it.

It's in my owner's manual, 2003 600/700 Sportsman. "Diagnostic Mode" It's to check oil pressure, set idle (tach mode), and check voltage.

Here's what the book says:

"The diagnostic mode is for informational purposes only. Please return your ATV to your dealer for all major repairs.

To enter the diagnostics mode:

1. Turn the key switch off and wait 20 seconds.
2. Set the park brake and shift the transmission the neutral.
3. Hold the mode/reverse override button and turn the key switch on.

The initial screen displayed looks sinilar to the top illustration and refers to the software version installed in your ATV. This information is displayed breifly.

Use the mode/reverse override button to toggle through the diagnostics screens. The first screen displays battery voltage.

The second screen provides full diagnostics for the entire oil pressure electrical circuit. Along with the letters PrSSr, there will be a box on the left side. If the box is high, the pressure is normal. If the box is low, the pressure is low.

Screen three is the tachometer for setting idle speed. If this needs adjustment, please contact your dealer.

As long as the center is in the diagnostic mode, the wrench icon will reain lit.

To leave the diagnostic mode, either shift the machine out of neutral or turn the key switch off and on. NOTE: Any movement of the tires will also take the machine out of the diagnostic mode."

Hope this helps.

Good info sp600towtruck. I don’t have a service manual for my 2001 Sportsman 500 H.O. and would like to know what it says about my model. Does anybody that owns one have time to go look at their manual and let me know? …..I’ll be in your debt.

hey, SP600towtruck, I was just looking at my 03 600 the VDO is Version 1.8 and you were saying how if the box next to Prssr in the diagnostics mode is up the pressure is up but i shut the machine off and the box still stays up, wouldnt the machine think there is no oil pressure and the box would go low or does it know it is off and the box stays in the normal position? And if the box ever goes to the low possition will the icon display when you are not in the diagnostics mode? I thought they removed the oil pressure sensor on the '03 models? Just wondering cuz mine was leaking oil out the valve cover, so i want to keep an eye on the oil pressure.

Yeah mine stays on too. I think it displays what the pressure was the last time that it was running. And pertaining to it coming on while you're riding, I'm sure the oil icon will come one and the speedo needle will flash if there ever is a problem.

Mine is Version 1.8, too. It's an '03 that I got on Dec. 5th of 2002 and has 133.6 hours and 707 miles. Great machine.

my machine has also been great, outside of some leaking(oil, gas and coolant) i have 425miles and 50hrs or so. my manual says nothing about the oil pressure(it is a brown '03 manual) the book references version 1.6 so who knows.
