Ok so what are your opinions on shaft vs. chain drive which do you think is better? are there any shaft drives you should stay away from on any brand atv.

 

Call me old fashioned, but really prefer the chain drive models over the shafts. JMO, simplicity is the key on a machine that was designed to take the abuse that the operator and operating conditions gives these machines.

I have rebuilt too many shaft drive gearboxes ($$$) over the years, basically water/mud being the culprit for the failure. A chain system is simple, more economical to replace, and with a little care from the operator, will last just fine. Sure there are horror stories out there of chains breaking and busting trannys, but overall, I think you will find the cause to be operator neglect, not just out of the clear blue a chain broke.

 

I agree with quadwrench,you can replace several chain's and sprocket's compared to repairing a shaft drive.

 

Shaft drive also has to suck up more hp and makes it very hard to change gear ratios!

 

my 86 250 has shaft drive but my opinion has been swayed due to the fact that after 18 years of unjustified *** kickings the thing has not costed us A PENNY in any way other than fuel and back tires,long over due oil changes.its a farm quad.

but if i had to fix one on a trail id mutch rather have a chain at that point. ther just alot more user friendly and you can see what kind of condition is in

iguess what im saying is that chains take out the guess work if you know how to readthem.

 

For a utility quad or mudding I would definately say shaft. Mud will eat up the chain and sprockets quickly.

For a sport quad there is no question that its gotta be chain.

 

so what about the V-force? I think it has proven itself this past year in the gncc world dont you?

 

Thanks all for the replys I like the chain myself. but was looking a buying a quad with a shaft drive just wanted some info. keep up the replys with your good or bad experiences with shafts or chains. this well definitly help me decide.

Thats why the V-Force is in the Utility unlimited class. Doesnt seem quite fair though. Jus tbecause it is an Auto with shaft drive doesnt make it a utility.
