Default water pump and crank case question??

ok, im attempting to change my waterpump seal and oil seal on my scrambler 400. I just got it back from having the top end done. when they started it up it had antifreeze coming out of the weep hole. i just got my service manual today. yesterday i started working on it and was attempting to drain the counterbalance to see if it was milky. i took the drain plug out for the counterbalance and nothing came out. so i figured it was the wrong drain plug. i took the drain plug out of the crankcase and it looked like chocolate milk. (I know this is a very stupid question but is there supposed to be oil in the crankcase? If so where do you fill it?? i know i am an idiot. well anyway i filled the counterbalance back up. started it back up and ran it for a couple of minutes. Drained the counterbalance again and the oil was gone, nothing came out of the drain plug. i made sure the drain hole wasnt clogged. where could it have gone. i notice when it took the impeller off the waterpump there was alot of play in it. would thing be just from the bad seals or is this normal?? also when i put the case back on can i use permatex ultra copper gasket maker in place of the copper gasket and water pump gaskets?? i know i am asking alot of questions, but your help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Default water pump and crank case question??

I dont know a whole lot, but the counter balance plug is next to a few other plugs. There is a plug for draining the starter too down there. The counterbalance doesn't hold a lot of oil, not real sure how much. When you are adding it, how are you doing that?? I always added oil from the plug in the front of the engine just beside of the exhaust port. Anyways, that is what I know. I am not real sure on the rest of those questions, maybe someone else can help. I only know things through my own experiences. Brad

Default water pump and crank case question??

Like Brad stated, there is a starter drain, along w/ the crankcase, and counterbalance drains. I'd suggest dropping the skidplate on the quad, find your maint. page on the locations of the maint plugs....slide on under, and get acquainted. Normally you shouldn't get anything out of the crankcase. The starter should be empty also. The counterbalance should be changed at least once a year....if you do a lot of mudding, you should change it more often. I've had great luck w/ Mobil 1 10W30 for the counterbalance. Remember to pay close attention to the water pump/counterbalance seals, they may look identical, but one has an additional lip on it. Take your time. Default water pump and crank case question??

i found in the service manual the locations of the drainplugs. where do you think the oil that i put in the counter balance went? and what do you drain from the crank case drain plug? in my service manual it doesnt say that i need the special seal puller to get the seals out, nor does it say i need a special to to put them back in? i have been doing alot of reading in these forums on the subject. Do i not need the tool to do the seals? I know someone who has the tools and for a little $$$ he will put them in. But if i dont need to i would rather save a little money. Also what about the gaskets?? thanks again

No special tool needed, just tap the slotted nut behind the stator with a punch.Just remember it is left hand thread.Once you are inside the water pump area, and you get the impellar off there are two seals back to back in the housing. The one with two lips goes on the oil side ,and the one with 3 lips goes on the coolant side.Just make a note of how you take them out.Hope this helps.Oh yeah get yourself a gasket kit.

Default water pump and crank case question??

ok, thanks. i have the waterpump off now. i was looking at the manual and it looked like you needed a special to remove the seals in the 4 strokes but not the two strokes. So do i just pry the seals out with a screwdriver? sorry for so many stupid questions. just trying not to screw it up. thanks again

Yep that will work.Just make a note of how they are.And try and notice the lips on the inside of the seals. Also make sure you clean the shaft that they ride on real good also.
