The only way that I know is to completely seal the clutch case up, and make the hole in a higher place, ive seen people us shop vac tube to do this. They usually run it up by the tank, so it can go in water up to the seat. The only problem with that is the motor and gearcase will probably start leaking. Brad

Sounds like you have a bad cover or gasket!! Take the belt cover off and check to make sure it is not broken and check the gasket real good. If you don't find any problems replace it and fill the whole cover with water from the opening on the top and see where water is leaking out of then you can fix it

Are you sure this is a belt issue? Water in the belt housing should not stall the motor unless it's getting in the crank seal. This sounds like a carb vent or air intake problem.

you know now that i think of it the dealer had installed some aftermarket clutch springs, maybe they didnt seal the cover when placing it back on the bike, it never did this before.

Sometimes when the cover is removed the gasket can pull away from it's groove and if the mechanic didn't notice it, will not seat properly when reassembled. When you check the gasket, check it closely as it doesn't take much to cause it to leak.
Most Polaris's handle deep water quite well if driven at reasonable speeds. If on the other hand you hit the water fast then water will enter the clutch cover vent filling the housing. My 01 Sportsman can handle water levels upto the racks as long as I take it easy (not creating a bow wave) but keeping the revs up. Finding the balance takes a little practice.

Water in your belt housing won't cause the engine to bog down and die. wet belts silp and the bike will quit moving because power isn't getting to the wheels. bogging down could be caused by water in the intake.
