Mosture in the Speedometer
#1
I have a 2002 Sportsman 400
There has always been a bit of mosture in the speedometer, but only seen when it is condenced to the cover.
now the needle is just jumping all over the place. and when i disconect the cable for the sencer. it just remains at zero.
We had told the dealer before it was out of warenty and he didn't seem to think it was a big deal, Idiot. and now that it has become a problem so we think. he says that the whole thing has to be changed, $400 or something he said.
I was just wondering if any of you have had this kinda problem and what you did about if you did, any coments or recomendations would be great.

I've never heard of the speedo's kinda shorting out .. which is what sounds like is happening with yours, but it only makes sense that moisture around electronic parts is going to cause trouble. Every friend I have with a polaris sportsman has condensation in their speedos, some worse than others, but they all still work.
I think the dealer aught to repair this under warranty since they didn't fix it the first time when the warranty was still in effect. I hate it when things like that happen. It's just poor customer service. Honda replaced the starter on my accord at 120,000km under warranty, even though the warranty on that item expired at 100,000km .. they said it was because something like that should not have failed so early. A good faith gesture that will probably bring me back to honda again for my next vehicle.

I have a 02 sportsman 400 and have the same problem. I have had moisture in the speedo form almost day one and late last fall the speedo started jumping all over the place. In the begining of February I had my machine in a heated shop for a couple of weeks and the eratic speedo went away, however I went for a ride again on Sunday and it returned. I am thinking of baking the sensor in the oven at a low temp. for a while and see if that cures it because I think it is the sensor and not the speedo.
