Default 4x4 not working

i recently tried crossing a creek with my 95 scrambler 400 4x4. as i started across i noticed that it was a little too deep for me. so i backed out and went around the creek. as i was just about home i ran into a snow drift and i noticed that my left front wheel wasn't spinning and a few minutes later neither wheels worked at all. when i push the awd button the light doesn't come on the switch. and neither the neutral light works or the reverse light. but the tail lights headlight and electric start all work. i noticed that the wire going down to the front left hub was broken so i fixed that. but it did not solve my problem. i would really appreciate it if anybody could give me some info as to what has gone wrong and how to fix it.

Sounds like the switch that indicates what gear you are in is not working or has lost power - if this switch does not function, the AWD cannot complete the circuit and will not work.

Here is the diagram for the switch :'95 Scrammy Gear selector - the switch is #5 on the diagram
