no speed from sp700

my '02 sp 700 will only go 40 mph, is this normal? I'm running stock tires and the machine only has 300 miles on it. It revs, but seems to lose acceleration at about 30 mph. The more I give it, the less it seems to accelerate. It feels like it's spinning and not getting traction, but I rode it over a large field and it wouldn't go over about 40. Is my belt slipping? Would a clutch kit help? and if so, are special tools required for a heel clicker? thanks

wow thats not normal they should go way over 40, get a new belt and the lil white bolt in your clutch make sure its tight this subject came up quite a few times about loosing speed but i never heard of one going on 40 but they all said some where about tighten up that bolt

I haven't taken it apart yet, but in low range it feels ok. I don't really rev it high in low, so I probably won't notice it. I do use my 700 for logging and dragging trees behind an arch, could this cause the belt to wear? I bought the machine with 180 miles on it, so i don't understand what is going on. What do you mean about the secondary spring? thanks,

Sounds like a cooked belt to me. The Scrambler did the same thing when it was shot. Are you using low gear when you haul? If not this will cook a belt faster than McDonalds!!

remove the outter clutch/ belt housing cover, center bolt on primary clutch, & and the 6 bolts with 3/8" hex heads. take note which way the plate is orientated (mark if needed cause balance is critical). you will be looking at the primary spring which will be violet so remove this and you'll see the spider collar, which is a white nylon threaded sleeve. this limits primary shift so if its loose, remove apply blue loctite and tighten (not too tight you are dealing with plastic the loctite will hold it on) or just remove the thing and throw in trash. reassemble paying close attention to orientation of aluminum plate removed earlier cause this is a balanced unit. your bike should be back to normal and able to approach speeds of nearly 70 mph. good luck with your machine.
PS... remove the 4 screws in the floor board so you can pull the fenders and floor board back enough to allow clearance needed to get the clutch/belt housing off.

no luck so far. The primary unit and white collar seem ok. When I started it with the cover off the primary did what it is supposed to do, which is compress the belt. however I noticed the secondary doesn't readily part. I didn't run it with the belt on, so I don't know if it is expanding or not. I had to push down hard to get the belt loose enough to remove. Is this normal? Also, how do I know if the belt is no good? is there a measurement or something. it looks ok to me. Can I replace the primary spring with a lighter one to engage sooner? Thanks
