Dont know much about the outlander but the SP400 is as reliable as thay come. Very nice ride. You cant beat a true 4x4 with Irs front and rear.

I have a 2004 Sportsman 400. I don't know much about the outlander, other than it gets reviews. But the Sprortsman 400 I can tell you is an great machine. Alot people talk about it being to heavy, but I think it makes it feel stable. It does have a 425cc engine, so it packs a little extra muscle that most other 400 cc machines. It even has a larger engine that the Yamaha 450 which is only a 421cc. It has plenty of power and is great for trail riding to. Just don't expect to catch a lot of air. Normal everyday riding it is as good as even the larger cc Sportsman, just can't keep up with the big bores on a straight drag.

I like the sportsman a lot, but opted for the Outlander recently. The outlander is absolutely incredible in terms of what I am looking for in a quad. Find a dealer that will let you drive quads back to back in a field. You may have to drive far to find one like I did, but that's the only way to know which will really suit your preferences and needs. If you have any specific questions about the Outlander I will try to answer them.

The Outlander is a nice quad but accessories are still very limited. If you want somthing that will be easy to get accessories for go with the Sportsman. Performance wise they will be very close. I had an Outlander 400 and now own a ATP 500 HO.

The Outlander is Faster, Plain and simple.. it will JUST about run with the 500 HO. It offers decent suspension, great accesability to fluids and maintenance Items. Its got good muscle for a 400, probably the most out of the 400 class.

On the other hand, The sportsman offers, I feel anyway, MUCH more tunability, and accesories. The 425 motor has been around forever and has really proven to be, I feel anyway, one of Polarises most reliable powerplants. Its Just a bit slower than the Outlander in a drag race, A tad heavier, however I believe it rides better. WHere the SPortsman really Shines, is when you drop it in Low and engage the 4x4. Its just short of a mountain goat.. My experience with the Outlander has been that the Visco Lok front end, Locks when needed, But unlocks if you let up on the gas.. I have seen an Outlander do this .. And read about it on another forum..

Both Quads are Great machines, you wont go wrong with either of them..
