Default Oil Filter Compatibility

I noticed that the oil filters for my Prairie and my Sportsman had the same diameter, and same hole pattern. Does anyone know any reason these filters shouldn't be interchangeable?

yes. they need the same pressure rating on the bypass valve. these newer engines have higher oil pressures; too low of a bypass pressure rating will prevent the filter from doing its intended purpose.

If you go to the WIX oil filter website (they make oil filters for ATVs too (same as Napa Gold)) the part # for the V-force/P700 is the same as the part # for the SP500 (and any other Polaris single cylinder 4 stroke for that matter)

Save yourself some grief and go get OEM filters, I tried to save myself $4.00 CAD and got a cross referenced filter and it did not fit properly so I had to put the old one back on till I got the right one(so I had to change the oil twice, synthetic oil ain't cheap). For that kind of money it was not worth it, I only get a couple a year. This is off topic a bit but I also checked into Gates and Goodyear belts at an aftermarket shop the guy said he could get them for me but I would be better off to get them from dealer.

I believe the part # for Napa Gold is #1357. Alot more accessable and less expensive to boot

Thanks for all the info.

Today I went down to a dealer and bought a Sportsman ATV maintenance kit. It comes with 3 quarts of oil, 1 oil filter, 1 drive belt, 1 rubber PVT cover gasket (at least that's what I think it is), a spark plug, a new drain plug gasket, and an oil bottle spout. Total cost: $64.95. Not bad, considering these things would cost a lot more if purchased individually, and it's all genuine Polaris stuff.
