I have been riding dirt bikes,3 wheelers and atv's sence the mid 70's & have never seen a chain break.I have had to relpace chains & sprockets from wear but thats it.How does someone break one? Some people say go shaft drive because of this,I do'nt see a problem with chains if they are mantained.

I think allot of people prefer shaft because they really don't have time or the tools to maintain a chain drive system. I have freinds who have years on there atv's with no chain problems whatsoever. And overall shaft is more reliable and if it doesnt break, which they seem to hold up very well, then it is far more cost effective to have a shaft over a chain. but I would say if anyone has the tools and the time to replace these items, then it should not be a problem.

Never seen one break, but I've seen lots of 'em thrown! And, truth be told, worked desperately with the riders whose chains are now mashed between the sprocket and the frame and the transmission case, freeing the chains finally and re-spooling them on their sprockets . . . then, a few yards farther down the trail, a repeat performance . . . Good maintenance and adjustment minimizes these malfunctions, certainly; but, "These things happen, headin' West . . ." ("Wagon Train").

I broke my chain and had it replaced under warranty then my next ride found out why it was breaking. The swingarm bushings are out causing the chain to bind up on the sprockets. You would think the mechanic would have caught this? He didnt and it took him a month to replace the chain. So I think I will replace the bushings myself I could probably get them to repair this under warranty too although it is out of warranty but I dont trust the mechanic to overlook something else.

I have seen one chain break on my Dads 400 Explorer we were jumping water bars and when he came down it snapped it but the chain was 5 years old. That may have been part of the problem

I do not mind the chains up keep but the rear sprocket sure hangs low to the ground. My freinds Lakota's rear chain gard seem to hit every rock on the trail hard ,we even stopped to straighten it out once when it was rubbing against the sprocket.

I snapped one last weekend jumping. Landed hard on an upslope on a big jump and it snapped in two.
